Bayou Bash

 Introduction

Often times when talking about Malifaux games we assume that we'll be playing a different faction than the one we are playing. This can be the case in small groups where everyone plays something different, but when you go to tournaments (soon on again I hope) or bigger events you might find that you are looking down the barrel of another gremlin's gun. You might even find yourself at the mercy of a doppleganger disguised as your own master. With so much time invested in fighting everyone else, you might not have considered how to counter some good old Bayou Bashing. That's what I'm here for.

Fuedin'

We all know gremlins love to brawl with each other and they are pretty effective at it for the most part. So let's look at the best and worst match ups. First of all the one that probably is the WORST match up when it comes to Bayou on Bayou, Kin. Kin are really really good at fighting bigger folk. They struggle vs people their size though. In a lot of instances both their defensive abilities get shut down and the rest of the faction can match or beat her guns and still use everything on their cards.  Infamous is another keyword that you must consider very carefully because the mirror match is very wonky. Pianos are fuel for the other Mancha and Zipp can't Up We Go his twin either. Remember that Mah and bushwhackers are immune to your Pit Traps as well, shutting off some of Mah's utility and of course Whizz Bang all have blast resistant for the mirror match and Tri Chi all ignore Poison damage but the Brewmasters will be swinging with some nice stats on everything.

Insider Trading

So let's look at the tech picks into a Bayou on Bayou fight. As a gremlin player you already know what the faction struggles with. Armor is a pain to deal with and we have a couple sources. Gracie and the Whiskey Golem topping out at Armor 2 are good road blocks for your opponent to get past. Gremlins tend to bring guns as well, so our anti shooting options are good priority picks here too. Gators and First Mate have stealth, and Merris and Iron Skeeters have concealment auras. In fact, Iron Skeeters have both Concealment and Armor though at 8 points OOK they can get expensive. If your opponent is bringing captain Zipp or Mah the standard marker removal that Bayou is famous for goes a long way. Versus Ulix I'd recommend having your beaters hold 12 Cups to shut off reckless, denying some of their efficiency.

The Lists

So I have 3 lists I like to run versus other Bayou. Keep in mind they are my usual non standard picks so YMMV.

Mah's Gunline

Mah Tucket

Little Lass

Gautrauex Bokor

3 Bushwhackers

3 Survivors

So you want to shoot things? You want to shoot things before they can shoot you? how about 6 range 14 guns, 3 with stealth and 3 with armor and H2K plus healing and some card draw in the form of Deja Vu trigger? This list is really fun, especially when the opponent declares Kin. Poor gremlins won't know what hit them.

Brewie's Bots and Bits

Brewmaster (12 cups)

Wesley

Cooper

Pork Chop

Whiskey Golem

Emissary

2 Akaname

This crew is for when you want to sit in the middle of the board and dare anyone to come take it. Access to lots of armor, healing and potential to summon gamin to do scheme running, its a fun list with resilience that your opponent might not see coming.  You can switch out Cooper for Sparks if you like more explosions.

Stealthfiends

Zoraida

2 Bayou Gator

The First Mate

Spawn Mother

McTavish

Gautraeux Bokor

If you want a list that makes your opponent's gunline frustrated try this one. 4 stealth models reduce targets by a lot, and Spawn Mother can start pumping out Gupps to run the board for you with McTavish laying down covering fire.

Conclusion

That's most of my Bayou on Bayou advice. Have any good Bayou Bash stories? Fun lists you like to play? Let me know! Also if there's any other types of content you would like me to write about feel free to leave suggestions.

You Can Pick Your Friend's Nose, But You Can't Pick Your Friend's Schemes

The Struggle One of the toughest things in Malifaux is figuring out which crew to play when you see a scheme pool pop up on the App. There are times that a game can be won or lost at the point you pick your crew, though I’d argue that player skill can hold out over a bad match up, but that’s not what we are here to discuss today. This week’s article is about the strengths and weaknesses of keywords in different scheme pools. A lot of the talk is often about the strategy. In online groups and the forums I will often see, “What do we take into this strategy?” While generally the strategy is important, its half your points all together, there are other considerations that can sway keyword selection. The schemes, the opponent’s faction, the deployment, the board and probably the biggest consideration: your specific playstyle and familiarity with the keyword.  Now, this isn’t an article that is going to solve all your choice problems. Malifaux is a game that is full of player agency and...

Back for the Loot!

Introduction Hello friends! I recognize that it has been a while since I dusted off this blog and created any content of my own. The past year and a half has been a wild ride for a lot of people and I have been remiss to write about one of my favorite subjects for a while now. With the addition of a brand new book for Malifaux and the advent of new titles, I felt it was time to stretch my typing fingers and get to back to work.  So everyone gets a new look and some new rules down in the Bayou! I know the boys in green don't get too much coverage on average so I thought I'd start us off with talking about the big boss himself. I want to cut through the card run through as quickly as I can though because he's already been covered in a great video reveal. What I'd like to discuss though is how Som'er and the other titles are going to change Bayou play. So if you are a Bayou player, stick around its gonna be fun. If you aren't a Bayou player, stick around anyway a...

Some call me.... Wong

INTRODUCTION  Wong can't help but be a meme at this point. His original appearance is a tie in to Egg Wong Fu from Big Trouble in Little China and this new Wong, the Enchanter is a call back to Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Which is amazing. So let's talk about why new Wong is so enchanting Having a Blast Let's just get the elephant in the room out in the open. Wong went from shockwaves to blasts and I love it. In my last Wong article I talked about my dislike for shockwaves and that has softened some over time but not enough that I'm not excited to see Wong's new attack steer away  from them. Coupled with Pyrotechnics and a trigger for irreducible (to the target only), this Wong has a lot more control over his damage output but puts less pressure on his opponents hand. 5 irreducible is huge btw and when you attach double blasts to that you can easily reach models your opponent thought were very safe. From the back side of an enemy's base you can reach up to...
